Leadership in Resilience and Disaster Response

Vanuatu is no stranger to natural disasters, and from cyclones to earthquakes, its communities repeatedly demonstrate resilience. VDPA’s founding was inspired by the devastation of Tropical Cyclones Pam and Winston, highlighting the need to centre people with disabilities in disaster management leadership and planning.

During times of crisis, people with disabilities are at heightened risk — not just from the immediate impact of disasters, but from exclusion in response and recovery efforts. VDPA’s advocacy ensures these voices are heard in planning, in aid distribution, and in rebuilding. Their work is part of a broader movement in Vanuatu that emphasises inclusive disaster risk reduction and community-led resilience.
